Samsung’s $5.85 billion offer for flash memory chip developer SanDisk will probably be rejected by government regulators fearful such a tie-up would harm competition, analysts said Tuesday.

With such an acquisition, Samsung would likely gain control of the majority of the global supply of NAND flash memory chips and could squelch potent rivals, said Jim Handy, memory chip analyst at researcher Objective Analysis.

Attackers have hacked the Web site of the Texas National Guard and are using it to serve up offers of fake security software and plant rootkits on unpatched PCs, a security researcher said today.

The National Guard’s site was hacked sometime before yesterday, said Roger Thompson, the chief research officer of Czech Republic-based security vendor AVG Technologies Cz SRO. Thompson confirmed Thursday that the site was still pushing phony antispyware software and infecting users with a rootkit.

The world just got a bit riskier for us “road warriors.” You see, there’s this perfect storm of risks lined up to make our lives a little more dangerous. Here’s why, and here’s what we can do to fight back.

In the last couple years, a new breed of mobile user has sprung up. Thanks in large part to the iPhone (and the iPhone-wannabees), the world now has a lot more mobile devices hungry for a live (and free) Wi-Fi connection. Sure, we’ve been using Wi-Fi for years, but at least for many of us, what was once the casual and even occasional laptop login has become a more convenient and far more frequent quick check for email, stock reports, headlines, etc.

BEIJING (Reuters) - When the curtain for the Beijing Olympics is raised on Friday, it will not only be the Chinese organizers who will be hoping the opening ceremony is a major international hit.

With an estimated audience of more than 1 billion, the opening ceremony, which will showcase China to the world, will also put the International Olympic Committee in the spotlight.

Since awarding the Games to the Chinese capital in 2001, the IOC has had to endure a different emotional rollercoaster than for past Games.

Scammers have duped hundreds of people out of thousands of dollars each using bogus Olympic ticket-selling sites, reports said today. A security expert warned that more will follow.

At least two Web sites — www.beijing-tickets2008.com and www.beijingticketing.com — have been shut down in recent weeks after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) filed restraining orders with U.S. federal courts, the Los Angeles Times, among other newspapers, said over the weekend. The Reuters news service followed with a story of its own today.

At the Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas next week, researchers will demonstrate software they’ve developed that could steal online credentials from users of popular Web sites such as Facebook, eBay and Google. The attack relies on a new type of hybrid file that looks like different things to different programs. By placing these files on Web sites that allow users to upload their own images, the researchers can circumvent security systems and take over the accounts of Web surfers who use these sites. “We’ve been able to come up with a Java applet that for all intents and purposes is an image,” said John Heasman, vice president of research at Next Generation Security Software Ltd
